Wels Catfish (Silurus glanis) Grow out and informational thread!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
EBAY has thermostats you can use to control a fan for about $20. I'm using one on a standard fan with great success on my garage tank and it hits 100F in the garage pretty regularly. I'm currently keeping the tank between 80 and 82F

Yeah it was just too hot. That sucks! Sad day. I have the lid completely off my Goonch tank and a ceiling fan right above it that’s on all the time. I’m having trouble keeping the temps at 75! Every year I cross my fingers I get through another summer. I work 12’s also. Sometimes that’s a long time to be away. I’m reading up on monitoring devices that can send info to a phone. Crap news, sorry bud.

I'm sorry man. That's terrible :(

that really sucks but like some1 else said u mite want to check ur parameters cuz i kept my wels catfish at 88 for a while back wen his tankmates needed the higher temps and hes all good

Likely, there must be a difference between a rather sudden large jump in the temp and an increase of the same magnitude but a slow one, during which the fish can gradually adjust it's body and blood and gill chemistry and physiology to the gradually lessening amount of dissolved oxygen.

IDK about wels but some fish enlarge their gills/their gill area/capacity by growing extra feathery protrusions on their gills in response to a lessening oxygen concentration... but these fish have evolved in harsh tropical environements with large water level fluctuations and a long drought season, so I am thinking of this just as an example. Perhaps other fish from more stable environments, like wels, have some strategies like that only to a much smaller degree.

Ok guys the water was fine, I don't have enough air running in the tank for high temps. The temps here go crazy that time of year. The week before we had 40s and some snow that week spiked into the 90s, next week more snow and no 90s again til now. Just how montana works. You have to be prepared for it. NO other fish were affected only the largest two in the 100 gal. That tank was the only one the temps spiked in. Sperata is fine and I have a great update for him as well. There would have had to been a huge impact on water quality to kill them off in hours like that. The only change was water temps. No feed that morning before I left out or the day before. Tank is fed every other day. I just wasn't as prepared for the temp fluctuations here as I should have been. For me the heat is more of a killer in montana than the cold. During the winter the temp is most stable in the house. Heater keeps it constant. During the summer it can be very dangerous. Especially when you have a roomate that doesn't like to turn on the AC. Fan running in my room keeps the temp in check in there. Should have had one on this tank as well.
