x24,i submerge most of my media and bio balls must do something or they wouldnt be called bio balls
and i think b ball go both ways.lol
oh and i didnt buy these so it was worth it

don't get me wrong, its better then nothing, they do have some surface area and they do work submerged (and they are free lol) but you'd be better off with regular filter floss, pot scrubbers are a porous rock or ceramic in the hob and submerged in your sump and a giant tower of bioballs.
