Whale Shark- Georgia Aquarium question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Dave - Tony is actually not there anymore, Matt can fill you in on that one. And a bull exhibit would be awsome, how close are you to design?

OK! - and so I was bored and decided to catch up on all the posts from here, (since I didn't make a point of it before), and HOLY CRAP I had no idea you guys had shifted the convo onto MBA, LOL LOL LOL, why didn't someone let me know!! Hahahaha, yea some of those posts were too funny with what you guys were interpreting on our exhibits/husbandry/releases, hahahaha I was crackin up. I could write a novel right now to answer all those questions but wont unless someone still wants to know, considering they are mainly from June. But yea, you guy's posts were intresting to say the least, LMAO.

Hey there Water baby, so we have gone from the poor whale shark to the creation of a bull shark display - the good news is we won't have to go to Taiwan to get them, rumor has it we can get it out of the river around St. Louis!!

As for the project, we don't have one - that is because everytime I suggest it the keeper goes *(&%^^(). The closest we came was in Louisana and the tank was going to be in an abandoned shrimp boat. I think the reason they went with my suggestion, was they had no aquarium people on staff. The whole project was overbudget, due to a few engineering mistakes so the bull shark idea was canned. That was 6 years ago and the director called me last week and wanted a new budget for it. If the job happens I will get in touch with both of you.

Just getting ready to turn in our bid to redo our Splash Zone penguin exhibit - oh I guess it is yours too. So if you hear a loud yell from David's office you will know our bid was too high.

Take care,

Dave

LOL yes I do believe they are a lot closer than Taiwan! LOL. And yea definately keep us informed on the planning as it may develop!! And huh?? - Your the one who designed and is re-structuring the splash zone?? LOL I had no idea that was you oh my gosh!!

Hey there Water Baby, we were only the contractor who built splash zone after a redesign to fit your budget, we also did some insert work and some work on the outside tide pool. As for the new redo, we are bidding it, but hopefully we will get it. It would be fun to do more work there.

Lol you can call me Em, haha, but water_baby is fine too. And oh trust me, I was all over your site yesterday when you told me that and I was like "Look there it is!! Our wittle peng-ins" LOL awsome job by the way!!! I am typically not too involved with them unless I am asked to help out with some cleaning or random odd jobs - - I stick mainly to my fish, LOL, but it is hella cool over there and I am always goofing off so I have several retarded pictures of me in that area. I hope they choose your bid too, I dunno but I strongly feel like when you start mixing up and trading out contractors, design engineers and artisans and all that, that in most cases it's not going to go so smoothly - well unless your first team royally sucked - like at como, LOL, poor matt developed a co-dependency on tylenol!! LOL... In those circumstances, ANY change is good change, LOL. But I mean overall, I feel like if you designed it, you know its inner workings better than anyone really, you know the structual advantages, weaknesses, pro's/con's and could probably expand off your original ideas and make it awsome!! - Bringing in a new team is not always a bad idea, but keeping in mind that different teams work different ways, have different standards and goals and visions of what they consider "masterfull" - - Yea, simply put I hope they take the bid too!!

Hey Aquaman, being in Georgia is now a good thing (with the aquarium) as opposed to the hot swellering weather. The aquarium is wonderful and has some great people running it. Our company did all of the work in the coral gallery, which I thought turn out great - enjoy your aquarium!!

Looks like its gone abit off topic now but can anyone actually tell me what sorta stuff they have found out keeping the whale sharks? There is a segment tonight on tv on "60 mins" here in Aus about how many whale sharks have been killed over there in US and how not right it is. Wanted to know what ppls oppinions of it is. Gotta say i sorta agree. How much usefull information can you get off an animals used to swimming hundreds of Ks a day in a tank?? Ive heard hormone this and that ect but is the data gonna be the same as a wild one?? I mean im sure if a human was locked in a room the levels in there body of things will eventually change. And its not like there behaviour is natural in there.

I agree with the idea that what we see in captivity is limited by the size restriction....especially with large animals such as these. Whale sharks are somthing we need to just leave alone. It seems more like a tourist attraction than something being used for conservation at this point. I don't like that. I think aquariums should be educational tools being used to expand knowledge...not make a profit.
