Whale Shark- Georgia Aquarium question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
GA keeps bringing in new sharks. The exhibit is slowly failing on them. Just look at the current inventory vs what they opened with. Their next shark is alread caught and in holding in Japan. Where did the cownose rays go? Where did all the travolie go? Why are they down to one hammerhead? What happend to the mola mola they brought it that never made the tank?

I haven't been there since they lost the second male whale shark this Spring. But at that point the staff there was scratching their heads.

Hmmm --- could be that even at about 6 million gallons they've got some over crowding issues the tank. But that's just a guess.

But it does sound like they have some major problems going on.

And also sounds like the fairly near future - they will either be doing some serious re-designing of their tanks, or closing down exhibits.

I've got a few on a disc at home. I'll be back there Saturday. I'll post them. You can see them from various dates as things slowly slip. I've got some great shots of the bigger animals and the shape they're in.

When I was there I noticed that alot of the smaller fish, grunts, snappers, etc. seemed to have HLLE. I also have a couple of pics of the aquarium including one I use as my background.

Look at the lead edge of the pecs on the whale sharks.... all of them looked this way. Rubbed raw and bleeding. Also look at body mass. These things are underweight.

Wow - Thanks for the heads up Matt

Your right - way too skinny.

And IIRC Whale Sharks aren't skinny sharks. I believe a 20 ft long Whale Shark should weigh at least 2-3 tons, not 1 ton -which is what it looks like it would weight - by my guessimation -based on these photos.

People want to see big healthy, and well feed Whale Sharks - not skinny, sickly looking Whale Sharks. They really need give these sharks more shrimp, & krill. Even if that means feeding each whale shark at least 500 lbs of shrimp, krill, and small fish per day.

Yeah 500 lbs of shrimp & krill per day may sound intense.

And I'm not say that exactly what they would need - just a rough guessimation.

But they need about double what ever there normal feedings have been to help pack on the lbs.
