what are moss balls for?

they're too heavy from being water-logged.

It isn't producing enough oxygen to float.

Well, if they're not producing enough oxygen, it's certainly not because my tank isn't well oxygenated. It's a 20-gallon-high, and I have an AC50 hob with the flow control valve open full throttle, plus a four-inch airstone that bubbles vigorously. Plenty of current and should be plenty of oxygen. None of my fish are at the surface struggling to breathe, so it must be okay. Thus far, my mossballs are still a rich, deep green, and I haven't seen any browning or turning white, at all. They've been in my tank for several months.

Them producing oxygen has nothing to do with the O2 levels in your tank, they need more light.

Why would I want them to float? Aren't mossballs supposed to stay on the substrate? Mine have been in my tank for months, and are still nice and green all over -- no fading, no signs of any kind of distress.

Are we referring to the same species of mossball? Mine resemble tight little deep green furballs. They look fuzzy.

I read that they do okay with low to medium light, and mine are fine. Unless the Japanese kind are different. I think mine are called Marima mossballs.

Just wondering ...
