I've been thinking about my two koi lately. They’ve been in the aquarium for a while, and honestly, they’re getting pretty big! I’ve been feeling like they need more space to swim and grow, so I’m considering getting a pond for them. I think they’d really enjoy having more room, and it would make me feel better knowing they have a more natural environment. I’m excited about the idea, though, still trying to figure out the best way to set it up.

Did you mean to post a pic of your Koi in the Photo Lounge? If so we would love to see them.

You can post in the Pond setup forum if you are looking for specific advice.

I think, even if I had a tank big enough, I wouldn't keep them in an aquarium because I don't want to go to jail.

Do you mean "Aquarium Jail"? or MFK Jail? or Jail, Jail?
Jail jail. Here in NZ just having them in a tank you're probably unlikely to get jail time probably more like the $5000 fine but you had to transport them soooo...
Ah, here we go:
Legal designation
  • Unwanted Organism
  • Noxious fish
It is an offence to sell, breed or distribute any Unwanted Organism under Sections 52 and 53 of the Biosecurity Act 1993. Moving live koi carp is also an offence. Penalties include a fine of up to $100,000 and/or imprisonment up to 5 years (Section 157 (1)).

People who possess, control, rear, raise, hatch or consign Noxious Fish without authority are liable for a fine of $5,000 under the Freshwater Fisheries Regulations 1983.
