they are pretty mellow, at least mine is. I think black ghost knife fish bichirs and clown loathes look best with them.
What fish would go well with fire eels?

Since OP revived it, I'll go ahead and post.I keep my fire eel with a royal knife, 2 vampire tetras (tats), and a gulper catfish. The fire eel is probably the most aggressive thing in the tank, at least when it comes to feeding time. I'm growing out a lungfish I plan to add to the mix as well, once he's too big to be eaten that is 
I have my fire eel with an M. aral (striped peacock), some bichir, American cichlids (severum, acara, choc, etc) and rainbows!
