What happens to a fish after you release it?

it's only the tree hungers that are against fishing that want you to think all the fish you catch die.. Like stated earlier some are more tough than others. Trout are fragile but, if you use a net and don't have them out of water long they are fine. Bass are nearly a 100% live rate. I have a lake in my backyard that's full of bass and sometimes i catch the same fish multiple days in row.

Well I was saltwater fishing and every fish we released died. I would assume it was the sudden change in pressure from being brought up from the bottom to the surface pretty quickly but I don't know for sure.

Who did you go with? Was it a Charter or private boat? The charter guys, especially head boats, are pretty bad about not taking the time to vent their fish leaving a trail of floating red snapper behind them that are just going to die or get eaten. It pisses me off to no end The googans are pretty bad about doing at as well.

If you vent the fish to release the built up gasses, the fish will swim down just fine.

If you feel bad about killing the fish just catch cat fish. They are basically indestructible lol we have mudfish here in the rivers that we often kill because they will just keep biting your hook over and over

agreed! that's why i'm a big fan of circle hooks and changing out treble hooks on lures for singles. even crimping down barbs a lot of times.
