What is metronidazole? Are they available in retail stores?

Hi, so i've been reading up about metronidazole.. how this drug is suppose to be a quick cure against internal parasite, and anti Protozoa.... this drug seems great for all of us fish keepers...

But im curious.. what does it really treat? Just parasite and bacteria??? And has anyone seem them available like Petsmart or a LFS?

Im asking because it seems this would be a drug to treat fish in quarantine purpose..... am i wrong?

it's definitely available at Petsmart, Petco, Walmart and LFS . . . it's one of the active ingredients in Jungle Parasite Clear and API General Cure, although I'm sure you could find it somewhere sold as just pure metro on its own . . .

and yes, there are some people who use it pro-actively when quarantining. I was on an EBJD forum that stongly encouraged using Jungle Parasite Clear during the quarantine period, and/or at any sign of internal parasites

wow.. thanks so much.. I actually thought i was a nut and couldnt find it.. Turns out i have a box of general cure tucked inside my fish first aid and found it.. Thanks for the info..

no worries . . . I've used both Jungle Parastie Clear and API General Cure with success, never had a problem with either of 'em

i ve used just straight metro and it works pretty good. Its commonly used to help fight the parasite that cuases the symptoms which you see as hith. I ve only found the straight metro at one lfs (not a big chain) and the vet (which you have to have proof of needing it for a pet... ).

My doctor actually prescribed me metro as antibiotic, its a tablet form and i have some extra left but idk if i can use it or not.....any advice?

from what i heard.. u mix it in with the water.. and it is absorb into the fish.. from its lungs..

The issue is that.. it does cure stuff.. but it damages the fishes' liver.. its actually not recommended for long term use...

But ya.. i was at my petsmart today and saw API and even Jungle Parasite in bottle form... both have Metro....

anyways.. thanks for everyone's help..
