I have just seen the latest issue of Tropical Fish Hobbiest and they have a Q&A on Ropefish in which they state the maximum length is 3 feet.

Now, I though this was commonly though of as false and a seze of 12" or slightly larger was the max.

So what I want to know is...

What is the largest reedfish/ropefish you have ever seen?

The max. wild caught size was 3' they usualy max out in home aquaria at 18-24''

Thanks,

so we have a potential size in the wild of 3' but no more than 2' in captivity?

I have never seen one larger than 12-12".

Does anyone have pics of large specimens? Or does anyone here even own one over this size?

If the max size in the wild is 3' then that's the size you can expect in the home.
If the average size in wild is 2' then that's the size you can expect in the home.

It's not like the fish knows hes not in the wild and decides to not grow as much. :)

Actually they should in theory grow even bigger if you think about it,we should be as aquarists provide clean warm water year round,a much better
diet than they could get in the wild basicly an ideal enviroment.
That said in captivity there seems to eom kind of limiting in home aquaria and its not necessarily the tank size. Also 3' max size in the wild there are several unknown factors ageis one the avg size adult size male is approx 5'6 however
many are taller and many are shorter -Anne

I am prepared for the possibility that mine will reach 3 ft., but realistically in my tank I think she is far too polite to get that much food - a real sweetheart among the piglets :) Sometimes I direct food at her with a turkey baster when BGK is sleeping....
