What plants bring down nitrates(no3)?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
fishnutham,

I got mine from a gardening store, a local tree nursery. Just wait for pond season, it's around the corner!

Going to try java fern or moss that seems to be the most popular.

Indian fern is a very easy to grow floating plant and
it can also be planted in the substrate.Another great floating
plant is hornwort, my snakeheads love this.Low light substrate
plants that are good i've found are Cryptocorynes.

The best plants for reduction of nitrate are ones that grow quickly and easily. Hornwart, anacharis, hygrophilia (make sure it's not a noxious weed in your state!), water sprite, etc. Many propagate by clippings, which means you can make more of them reasonably easily.

Duckweed is a terrific nitrate sponge, but it can be a real nuisance.

Also, if you have no other animals in the house, you can put pothos into your tank. Just the roots. Dangle them in there and let them grow. These are also very good nitrate sponges. But pothos is poisonous to plants, so if you have a cat that likes to eat your plants, don't use the pothos method.

yeah, duckweed can get out of hand, but is easy to remove with a net and a little time.... is cheap and easy and not hard to get. is a component in both my planted tanks...

I hate duckweed. Once it's in your tank, it's extremely hard to get out :swear:
