i think the lava rock would just alter the water chemistry...not really filter the water from fish waste...ya know?

jus a reminder...the overflow output rate should always exceed the from pump sump input rate! its conceptual and if you write it on paper it helps to make more sense.

My thoughts for the refugium was more along the lines of growing out clippings and buds before putting them in your main tank... more than additional plants for better water quality.
.... just a thought.
