I only fish the local lakes around the middle of Alberta, Canada, so the fish aren't that big, it is mainly northen pike, pickerel, whitefish, and yellow perch, though you can occasionally find a burbot.
I caught my biggest fish when I was 7, it was a 38" Northern pike (we call them Jack fish...). I was sitting on the flat front of the boat and it was slowly dragging me off - then my Mom caught the rod. When we brought it in, it was almost too heavy for me to pick it up.
I find yellow perch to taste good, though I enjoy whitefish but you can't catch them on a hook,
you have to net them (and get a permit for it... we buy the fish from a friend who nets).
