What to feed blue gill?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mine eats freeze-dried bloodworms

Blue gills are omnivors. Almost any kind of live bug will do. I have sen them eat carp food, algea, bugs and craws. Once, my camp site was robbed of almost all food while I slept. DARNED racoons got me. Destroyed my 2 week supply of food.
I used some stail marshmallows (Itook them to bed with me) for bait. A diaper pin, a sholace and stale marshmallow. I lived off of bluegill and groundhog.

Just wanted to thank all for the advice! My four gills are now very aggressively eat just about anything I put in their tank. Got them eating pellets, shrimp, earthworms when walmart has them, and the occasional feeder guppy when I have a batch of fry. They have grown about 1 inch since I brought them home.
Thanks again to all!

I have two and they eat every thing, i have a hard time feeding my other fish bc there pigs. anything i put in the water. even my finger. ya they bit my finger. when i got them they were very hungry so i gave the pellets and flakes. now they eat every thing. feeders, flakes, pellets, shimp, bugs, fingers, crawfish, and hotdogs, oh and corn

Try staving them for a week and they'll be real hungry and eat what ever you want. One week is not going to kill them and they should be fine. I did this to my LMB because I was trying to get them to eat off my hand and it worked.....well 2 out or 3 are hand feedable.

They love meal morms but one reason I like bluegills is they will happily eat anything including french fries. I have had them scarf up bait worms while still in the 5 gallon bucket before I got them home.
