I've recently gotten my hands on my very first RTC:D I purchased him at my LFS for $8.00 :WHOA:his tail is a grey color and he has a big appetite I've had him for a week now and ive fed him various things like shrimp, silversides, krill and I attempted to give him the smaller version of Massivore but he would not touch it he is 3-4 inches and I would like to know how can I get his red to come out ive seen people who have RTC's and they have blood red tails other than that my RTC is a beauty can anyone help me out here oh and I am putting him into my 180 gallon soon but he has to be a little bigger or my Arowana will eat him once the Arowana and Rtc get bigger they will each go into a massive round stock tank that's about 1,000 gallons:nilly:any way back to the question how can I make his tail red or does it come with age ? thank you

Thanks so much and also is a 2 foot deep 10 feet in diameter round stock tank big enough for a single RTC it comes out to about 1,000 or so gallons is it deep enough or should I just start to build a different type of indoor pond?? If I could i would really like to use the stock tank though

IMHO, until he is under 2' (which he should reach in 1 year or a little longer from now), it is tolerable. When he grows bigger, it will be too shallow. An adult RTC is more than 2' tall. An intex inflatable pool with a rubber liner in it is another cheap but good option, 15'x3' is ~$200; 16'x4' hard wall ~$450 from Lowes.

There is a ton of threads on RTC and their housing requirements. Some are ongoing as we speak, some are older, others are in the stickies.

If you take "good" care of it and it has average genes, it should reach 3' in ~2-2.5 years, and 4' in 5-10 years, and 50-100 lbs. To house such a fish properly, IMO, one will need at least 10,000 gal. Again, my opinion. Many agree with it and many disagree. Many say that even that is not enough and no one who cannot provide a 100,000 gal tank/pond should be able to buy an RTC. Choose wisely. Like anywhere, there are extremes and the crowd in the middle and each side has their arguments.

Of course, in a 10,000 gal tank you can and should have more than one adult RTC.

Good luck!
