whats better as feeding fish goldfish or minnows?

I find that goldfish are more likely to carry something harmful. Guppies are cleaner. Plus, most of the time, if someone is getting goldfish feeders, they are from Petsmart. I have seen many Petsmarts. I have even managed one. Most of the time, those goldfish aren't good news. Neither is that water...for many reasons(at least in florida)

Personally I never feed live to any of my fish.

Minnows hands down. The most common are fat heads and shiners. A little quarantine goes a long way. And it also gives you a chance to feed them and raise the nutritional value. Minnows are harder to keep though. They do alot better at 50-65 degree's. Or alot cooler than your house is. I buy them by the pound for 15bucks, which is about 28-30 dozen depending on size. And keep them in a 55 with a 20 sump turning over about 15 times an hour. I always had a high death rate before i made a chiller for the tank. I can now keep the water around 58-60 degree's and I usually have 10-12 die out of the 360 or so minnows. A pound will last me a month feeding 10-15 minnows a day.

anyone know the difference

Both lack protein and are really not that nutritiuos for large predatory fish....Id stick with breeding Convict cichlids and feeding their spawns to the fish...Breeding your own feeder lowers the chances of bringing in parasite and diseases from lfs tanks.....Plus Convict fry grow much faster than goldfish and minnow fry.........

You could get some breeder sized convicts at any pet shop for couple of dollars, $4 max. They're pretty easy to raise and breed. Females get a orange/yellowish stomach as males have none. You could fit a small pair into a 10g. Another option would be a livebearer colony. I think guppies work best for raising fry for food. They can spawn every 2-3 weeks. Then just net the fry out into a grow out tank and feed them.
