my fluval 406 is about 6 months old and about once every 5 hours it will randomly start grinding for about 30 seconds then it will stop grinding and start pumping water again... i just ordered a new impeller, cover, and shaft for it... what do u guys think?

An air bubble can cause a grinding sound.

Had the same issue with 405. After cleaning the impeller assembly, the grinding noise started

Finally realized that the way I put it back together was causing the noise.

I should put the impeller back first, push it all the way down the housing, then put the cover.

At first, I attached the impeller to the cover, then attached the cover with the impeller attached. This caused the impeller to not sit at the bottom of the housing.

Hope I am making sense here.

figured id give an update turns out it was a bent impeller cover causing the noise when i replaced it i compared it to the new one and it had a decent curve to it... dont know how it got like that because i always had it clipped in right and pushed down flat.
