What's the best/cheapest pond filter media

I built one like the one your describing, my media was about 1000 feet of poly strapping, I have about 500 feet left and I payed like 24 bucks for it. My filter is like 20 gallons.

Are you kidding? $1000 for a prefilter that only filter down to 300 microns? How about you buy a piece of acrylic and a 25/50/100 micron filter sock and call it a day while spending less than $10?:screwy:

It is a neat design, but is not worth a 5th of that price.

NO!!!! I would never BUY that! I would COPY it! I like the design since it is self cleaning. i.e. minimal maintenance. Go on a 2 week vacation and you don't have to worry about coming back to a filter that is so clogged up that it isn't filtering anymore!

$20 for a piece of filter screen and a DIY box to hold the screen in a curve while the pump dumps water over it! $50 max!
