Hi,

i need to get some ammonia to do a fishless cycle for a new tank i've aquired.

i can only find household stuff with only 10% ammonia in, does anyone know what is in the other 90%

is there anything else i can use. i've got a mature tank so will be using water, filter media and some of the gravel from that tank as well.

any info would be great

cheers

I would take the filter's you are using on the new tank and put them on the mature tank for a week or two. Using the filter media and gravel from it is a good idea as well. As long as you don't add an enormous bioload on the new tank right away, I'd put fish in as soon as it was setup and up to temp.

As for the ammonia, your best bet is a hardware store. Just shake the bottle, if it foams up at the top, don't use it. The other 90% is detergents and scent additives so it smells "clean". Honestly though, by using seeded gravel and filter media, I don't think you need to do this. Unless you plan on having the new tank run for a while with no fish in it.

i agree, just wait a few weeks and run the filters off the other tank. will be worth it in the end.

I live in the UK and I use a product made by Waterlife called Biomature. It is mainly ammonia but also has minerals etc that are good for fishies. Works great!

i'll try that biomature, i don't really want to use one of the filters off my other tank. both are needed.
as for ace hardware store, i think if i went there for some ammonia it would work out to be the most expensive bottle ever lol

100% ammonia would be highly corrosive hence it is only sold as a 10% solution. Wouldn't do much for you if you breathed the fumes in. The other 90% are water as long as it is not scented. Perfectly save to use when cycling a tank. Tesco's stock it
