WHICH IS THE BIGGEST/MOST COLORFUL CICHLID?!?! Or should I just buy a FH?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank everyone who replied. Yea Clown knife is right I'm looking to get a Central/South American Cichlid.
Is that picture of the photoshopped one an African?

When it comes to biggest , and colorful that will not destroy each other.

Peacock bass !!!

I would say Umbee , but that is a very agressive cichlid that will destroy tankmates.

Thanks.. The Peacock bass does look nice. Yeah I hear the Umbee is a terror!!

Would I be able to have a Vieja Synspila and a Frontosa live together? I know the Frontosa is African and I'm not a fan of most African Cichlids because they dont have that "look" that I desire. I think the Frontosa does though.. Are there any other species of Cicilids that are bigger the the South American Cichilids, but have the same look? Excuses the "dumb questions" I'm new to this.

Temperament wise it might work, water conditions wouldn't mix well - one or the other wouldn't be happy much.

Many Mexican and Central American rivers have very similar water chemistry to the rift lakes of Africa. High pH and alkaline, I believe water conditions would not be a problem. I have raised frontosa with Centrals and find the only problem is the frontosa are a bit too docile for rowdy Americans.

A 220g can become amazingly small when big Central American cichlids are involved...and there's no sure thing cookie cutter for success in stocking a community of them. You'll almost always need a spare recovery tank (or a divider for your main tank) to isolate the fish that result from inevitable beat-downs.

If color and activity are your primary concern, you could go with a single, large cichlid (red devil or synspilum...now classified as melanurum...or another Paratheraps or Vieja...or maybe a big red snook - Petenia splendida) and a bunch of tin foil barbs or other decent-sized active fish.

If you like flower horns and want big colorful fish I would suggest carpintis Escondido. You could probably mix carpintis and synspillum just fine in a 220
