I think for those who have kept both american & african cichlids will agree that african tend to be mindless in aggression & relentless, but more than often lack the size to cause death, although some of the more larger african haps, i.e.... nimbochromis venustus are nasty pieces of work as 11inch adults. Mine would lip lock with an equal 6 inch red devil that are renowned for big jaw strength, but 90% of the time it was the red devil that backed down, American cichlids are better to own as a wet pet & carry more personality, but africans seem to want the fight more. unless of course a 11inch venustus would come up against a 18+ dovii/umbee...In the end I have figured keeping aggressive cichlids in community tanks is hard work & oftern results in many rescue jobs..thus unless one has a 300gallon+ tank it will always end in tatters..literally. I now have a semi aggressive american tank with a Bacourti, Lyonsi, midas, zonatus & 2 ocellaris bass... so far so good, but they are all still juvi's under 4 inch...the zonatus is so far the alpha & has the colours to back it up. these are kept in a 600litre..

The meanest one I have owned was a 15" male jag. He was the only fish I could keep in the tank and it took two people to clean the tank, one person to block him with a net and one person to fix everything in the tank. He bit me a few times. He would rip the heater off of the side of the tank, pull the filter intake off, and demolish any type of decoration you tried to put in there.

my top 10 list would go like this
1). Parachromis Dovii- Wolf cichlid
2). Nandopsis Haitiensis- Black Nasty cichlid
3). Cichlasoma Grammodes- Mini Wolf cichlid
4). Cichlasoma Beani- Bean's cichlid (at least that what my LFS calls it :p )
5). Cichlasoma Istlantus- Tantrum cichlid (also LFS... don't ask please)
6). Parachromis Managuense- Jaguar cichlid
7). Amphilophus Labiatus- Red devil
8). Amphilophus Trimaculatus- Trimac cichlid
9). Parachromis Motaguense- Red Tiger Motaguense
10). Caquetaia Umbriferus- Umbee cichlid
now i know what your thinking how could the Umbee be this low on the list because i have seen and heard that they give up fights pretty easily and their mouth is not vary strong its more for taking big chunks of food but none the less they are a great fish to own if you have the room

but that's just my opinion :D

A lot of ppl are saying that Oscars aren't very aggressive...I had one that killed a Dempsey, terror, and red devil.....

ooooo my this is very easy people can say dovi umbee jag.....blah blah blah forget about the size the most evil aggression fish is hands down the GRAMMODE! I have had all these different fish for over 25 years and never seen nothing like them.
