Hi!
I`m new in the aquarium hobby. Very entretaining by the way. I have a new aquarium that is working with an air pump. I disconnected the pump at night to sleep when the tank didn`t had any fish and it was still cycling, but now that it has some fish I`ve tried to sleep with the pump working and just couldn`t. So I`m looking for a really silent system.

Finally, these are my questions:

-Which is more silent: a powerhead or an air pump?

-Are there any powerheads that are silent enough to make almost no sound?

Thanks for you time...

The power heads that I have are almost silent.
Are you using the air pump for your only filtration? If that is the case you may want to consider a hang on back filter such as an aquaclear and forget the air pump completely:)
welcome to they hobby and to MFK!

air pumps make more noise, i've had an aquaclear powerhead and it didn't really make any noticeable noise

A powerhead is way quieter than an air pump. Change to an aqua clear filter and keep your water level high enough that the return water dosn't splash on the way back in and you will hardly hear it. I still use air pumps but only to enhance my tanks looks. I like the bubbles. Good luck wwith your tank. Carefull they reproduce like crazy.

Aquaclear power filters are rather noisy. I find marineland ones without biowheel (can be bought at walmart under rebranded "regeant") are more quiet. Powerheads are a lot quieter than air pumps they are almost silent (most brands). I use maxijet ones and they are very silent. Dont fall for buying those prefilter sponges for like 20 dollars. just buy a regular filter sponge cut a hole and stick it on its a lot cheaper.
