Which Pleco to get? for algae eating!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ottos are great algae eaters. Usually the problem with them is that you wont have enough algae to support the dietary needs of a small school of them.
L168 and L52 are great algae eaters as well and only grow to about 5"

Ooo butterfly pleco? they look pretty good!
Haven't seen those around!

Will have to look around and hopefully find one at the right price also!

thanks,
Swarsh

Go with an albino bristlenose. I have one in my 85 that does a superb job. They are not fussy about ph as long as tank is established and regular water changes are preformed. Stay away from the commons ----they get large and produce tooo much waste.

What ever pleco (or oto) you get, you probably will want to supplement their food with veggies, wafers, etc. If you are looking just to clean algae, maybe a an algae scraper/razor blade.

Gold nuggets do eat algae. But the best pleco to get for algae is bristlenose. They are freaking lawnmowers.

ive seen some super red german bred ancistrus for sale on aquarist classifieds.

Hmm I see...
I went to my LFS today and they had quite a lot to choose from,
I quite like the rubber lip plec, clown plec and bulldog plec!
I got told those don't grow too big and also eat algae!

Are they good algae eaters ? grow big?

I did see some albino and normal bristlenose plecs but they were around 1inch or less...
