An Oscar refusing food???? :WHOA:

Thats a new one on me , mine will eat anything and everything all day long. If you drop it in the tank it will try and eat it. It must be ill, definately sounds like HITH. Lots of different treatments, pay your money and take your choice. Good luck hope Oscar gets well soon.

It only eats about 5-6 pellets; anymore and it will just chew it up and spit it out. I tested the water and it's fine. I am thinking about buying Jungle Labs Hole-N-Head Guard... anyone know if that works well?

I would encourage 20-30% water changes twice a week and the other ideas recommended would help. As long as the HITH stops spreading, everything will be fine. It will have some scars. but you should see improvement.

Looks like HITH. Try Hikari Cichlid Gold. I've had some fish that refused to eat other types of pellets, but ate the Gold variant without problems. I'd also recommend performing water changes weekly and maintaining clean filtration.

Hope this helps.

actually I have an oscar right now that is too picky for hikari cichlid gold. after being on home-made fish food for about half a year, he wont eat any pellets if i just drop them in water. the only way he puts it in his mouth is if I coax him to jump for it out of the water and grab it out of my hand.

as far as the HITH problem I don't know what works best, I have not had that problem. Yet I have used Malafix for other things and it works like magic.

I really hate melafix.

There's a lot of misinformation out there... I haven't seen a conclusive study that narrows down all the true causes of HITH. Your first priority should be clean water and high quality food, and go from there.

He has "Hole In The Head" Jungle make a product that will treat it. How successful remains to be seen. Contrary to many beliefs that it is caused by feeding goldfish which I fed mine for years and they never got HNTH it is actually caused by poor conditions, such as feeding and water. I think mainly water since Oscars are so messy and many who have them do not understand the need to keep there water pristine. If you see him starting to twitch it is getting to his nerve system and if that happens I would put him down the humane way. But I think if you aggresively treat it now you can at least slow it down if not stop it all together.

Also see a post by MissLauraPeach in the cichlid media lounge titled my super awesome cichlids and check out her Oscars maybe you can get some pointers from her.

Looks like hole in the head!
