Who uses heat exchangers on their tanks?

Really nice setup! I'm looking to use a heat exchanger to reduce load on my chiller as new water enters. I'm wondering what type of exchanger you have and where you got it? Also, do you have any temperature measurements between the inlet and outlet side?

I dont get what you did. Couldnt you just wrap the heater in some water line and have it circulate?

I got it off of ebay, it's the 85k btu model meant for pools. The temperature drop of the hot water is about 6-8 degrees from inlet to outlet side.

I ment make a coil around the water heater, since the water heater is always warm. Which then heats up the coil, and the water inside, which would then heat the tank no?
 
You wouldn't be able to control the temperature that way, plus water heaters are insulated so you can't get to the heat from the outside
 
you can control the temp, water to hot, speed the flow a little, to cold slow it down. Go touch ur water heater, the outside isnt cold. I would try this but i dont feel like drilling a hole in the floor and ceiling
 
I know a great metal fabrication shop that could make custom heat exchangers if someone needed one. Stainless steel, Aluminum (not sure if that would be good?) Titanium:naughty:. Not sure on pricing though, they charge by the hour plus material cost.
