why be upset about snakehead when we can still keep bowfin?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what do you mean?
Are you thinking of different color strains/variants?
it'll take a while because I doubt anyone in the near future will breed bowfin.
But, who knows? Anything is possible.

I think its a type of psychology like, if you cant have something you want it even more. I bet if goldfish were illegal everyone would want them. Personally I dont see the big deal about snakeheads. Like I say, people want things because they are illegal. Get a damn bowfin and stop crying already.

Bowfin get too big for my tanks, silly. Channa assam stays a lot smaller, so more 'medium tank sized' aquarists like me could responsibly manage one.

But you are right about reverse psychology. When I see NFS on a tank I suddenly want to know what's in there.

amen Pyramid_party!!! and ya i think it will be quicker, cause yes it took forever to breed the oscar in captivity, but that was cause their was no real dilema. now people are starting to look to the bowfin, i give another year or two before they are being breed in captivity, and another 3-5 before they are getting cool color strains. like albino, ones that are patterened wierd(i.e. stripes spots blotched) and ones with wacky eyespots and so on.

i doubt they will be breed at all for color and patterns. bowfin get way to big for the average aquarist reaching 3'. also while they like to sit and lurk when they do get up and swim around there very very active so id say even a 500g would get cramped at times. they would need a HUGE pond to breed and as far as i know its never been done in anything but huge ponds and lakes.
i love my bowfin but snakeheads have more color and are way more manageable as far as size goes

I disagree. I think it is mainly because bowfin are nearly impossible to get ahold of, whereas with snakeheads (back when they were legal) could be found in just about any lfs, so now that they're banned, it really sucks for those who liked them, b/c now the only alternative is a fish that is 20x as rare/difficult to obtain. I do agree, though, that what you said is true for a few other fish. The biggest example I can think of would be asian aros. I guarantee you that if they had never been banned in the first place, at least half of the US fish keepers who currently are obsessed with them would still own silvers and blacks instead.
