Why don’t carp and koi have stomachs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Following for the answer.
If I had to guess, I’d say their diet doesn’t require it and intestines can digest all of their foods.
Not sure who on here would have a more scientific answer.

I’ve always wondered that but never knew why. Like where in their evolution did the decide they don’t need an organ lol. Is there any upsides to this.

Typically animals that consume large amounts of food with low nutrient content like plant material tend to have extremely long GI tracts. It takes more time to digest things like this therefore a long intestine pays off. That combined with the constant grazing reduces a need for a large storage component like a stomach. The most extreme example of this would be a koi or goldfish.

Predatory animals that consume nutrient dense foods like other animals tend to have large stomach. This also helps when they consume a meal like an entire animal. It is very difficult to graze as predator as meals tend to be opportunistic. The most extreme fish example would be a gulper catfish.

Thank you for the information.

Goldfish don’t have stomachs as well (u did say koi yes) . And a not common fact is that feeding small portions like 3 a day of a few pellets will reduce waste and increase water quality.

On the same topic...
Do seahorses and dragonettes have stomachs at all? Or is it just very small? They need basically constant feedings.

I've read years ago that Seahorses don't have stomachs but not sure about the Dragonettes. Personally had both species and non stop hunting live rock for coepods.
