Why fish yawn (real research)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol sorry if it was so boring guys did warn you.. on a side note we could change this to a poll and ask how many times did you yawn reading this..

To be honest i found it interesting because i was under the impression a yawn was to bring more air to the the body , which is still partly true in a fishes case because it stimulates blood flow improving o2 exchange.

While it may have a secondary affect as you describe, one should bear in mind the below:

In fish, yawning, if anything, should result in less oxygen being taken in through the gill filaments. Even though the mouth is opened, the hypid apparatus depressed and the opercles flared (resulting in a larger volume of water prescrit in the oral cavity) all pumping action of water over the gills ceases. In addition, since the animal usually remains motionless while yawning, even passive water movement over the gills caused by the fishs forward swimming movements does not occur. These observations suggest that yawning is unlikely to be associated with breathing in fish and does not act as a mechanism for correcting the oxygen/carbon dioxide ratio in the fish brain.

I liked it, I'll read anything about fish and fish behavior. It's a shame the other MFKers couldn't hack it.:D

thats funny......even reading your yaaaawn made me want to yawn.

I will read the hole thing today, I just couldn't be stuffed last night after work. I does seem to go on about the same thing a bit and when your not really in the mood for reading you kind of lose your place and it gets annoying.

Im curious if the fish inhales and takes in alot of water as it yawns or does it just flex the jaw? I am going to watch my TSN when it yawns and see if I can see it take in any debris. The gill sopening could just mean a reflex and not expelling any water at the time. I dont know.

he suggested that yawning could not be termed a 'displacement activity', but was merely a jaw stretching that occurred most often when the fish was 'unoccupied'.
