I had rescued a mbuna after all of its fins were chewed down to stubbs, its tail was completly gone like a fish bit its tail completly off. The back half of the dorsal, anal and tail fin were chewed off down into the bones and meat. The tail was the worst. It appeared to have just a few tail fin cells left along the edge. It could not even stay horizontal in the water. (had to build it a low cave to wedge itself in to stay in position). Its fins grew back, even the tail, at first with no pigment now its colored normally after about a year. it does however have a small area on the tail where it did not grow normally and is slanted at the top etc.. Like a knife cut off the edge of the fin from the base of the tail to the fin tip. Otherwise its normal looking. So your fish should repair itself, hard to tell how extensive the damage is with out a pic though.
