It'll be fine. My Bichirs never dug up a single plant, and it's a heavily planted tank with fine sand. I've never kept Synodontis myself but if they're anything like Callichthys then you might be best off with big sturdy plants for the substrate. In any case plants on driftwood is always a safe bet, and looks terrific.
