Worm Farm!

Howdy,

For those of you who feed their /\/\onsters live worms, this might be of help. I used to get my worms from the bait shop, 25 redworms for $2 or 3. Well, my knifefish moved up from 2-3 to about a dozen every night (HERE). That would get expensive, but I started my own worm farm: Get a 30x20x20 inches (76x50x50 cm) plastic tub, I drilled holes into the bottom, lid, and sides, and filled it about one third with a peat/sand/limestone mix. Then I ordered 1 lbs of redworms online (best species with regard to size and nutrition). That's about 1000 worms, and it ended up being around $30. They eat kitchen leftovers and multiply like crazy (no point in ordering more than 1 lbs). The worm farm is parked in the basement, so that I can access it year-round. I am not planning on spending any more money on worms anytime soon

A coworker just recommended that to me, I was skeptical. I might have to give it a shot. I never wanted to start a Wurm farm, but a worm farm is fine.

lol. I did something like this with european nightcrawlers and I have to say from experience DO NOT attempt this with european nightcrawlers. Despite what I read online they did not breed and they were always trying to escape. I might try it again with red worms in a few months. What's the coldest temperature that red worms can be in and still breed?

Well, the redworms like to hang out on the lid when they're hungry. I add more food to the soil, and they retreat into the substrate.

Breeding is seasonal (if you don't keep them in your heated livingroom) from Spring until Fall.

I did this for awhile. Had a small plastic box for them. Bred like crazy also. I took the box out one day and put it on the picnic table during a hott summer day. Forgot about it, and had some nasty melted earthworms when i opened it.

I don't think I can beat the $30 I paid for 1 lbs online. Local maybe, but shipping is a hassle, especially when it's hot or freezing.
