I might try doing this if I can dig up some earthworms from my back yard(use as treats so I won't need a ton of them)...Any tips on breeding them? :)

Well I compost with red worms in my kitchen, and it doesn't smell at all as far as other bugs I have yet to see any. There are some bugs that work with the worms at times but most who do this indoors won't have to deal with it. Just a tip for anyone who decides to do it indoors, yes at first the worms will escape but it just for about a week. To make sure that doesn't happen whatever fruit and vegggie scraps you feed just cut and toss in a blender that way when you put it in the bin it is available for the worms. The reason they leave the bins is there's no food available to them so blending the scraps makes it ready for them to just eat. This also speeds up the process. And for those who may have a smaller fish one can take the worms and placed them between two window screens and place them under a light or in the sun til they dry out then crush them and feed as if it were dry food. I had my bin for about five or six months and as long they are being properly fed they will breed like crazy. I spent 20 bucks on worms and I feed 2 turtles, breeding convicts, severums, and my new tire track eel almost everyday. Any questions just ask.

HarleyK... you mentioned drilling holes at the bottom, what is that for? Wouldn't that give the worms another exit??

No problems with bugs at all. No flies, nothing.
I used pure peat and mixed lime powder in at no special rate. Several trowels full.

romantic music, low lighting, candles.

My worms hang out in the top layer of the substrate. No escapees thru the bottom. As others said, it's for drainage, although my worm farm is not too wet, it hasn't dripped, yet.
