Weather loaches are actually not a bad lungfish substitute. Not just carnivorous and similarly shaped (which you point out), but they breathe air (one of the main perks of a lungfish).

Edit: new suggestion. With regards to patterning, zebra loach for banded knifefish.

INSTEAD gymnotus carapo you can obtain gymnotus stenoleucus which is 15 cm long....

Larger eels and their miniatures...well for mastacemalus armatus you can obtain mastacembalus circumcinctus.

Instead of your 1 metres long south american lungfish i would imagine protopterus amphibius which is only 44 cm long...

dojo loach is very different from your eels and your lungfish....

They've got a similar shape, that's really what you're looking for.

Again, for miniature tankbuster, ideally the behaviour should be similar as well. Dojo loaches and lungfish have vastly different behaviour.

I also am not in this hobby seriously either and don't spend my time staring at the head of fishes that I do not keep.

Again, for miniature tankbuster, ideally the behaviour should be similar as well. Dojo loaches and lungfish have vastly different behaviour.
