I have really hard water too, so I doubt it's that. Are you sure it's manzanita wood? I have several peices and they all will develope a slime but not to the point of looking nasty or anything.. really I can only feel it, not so much see it..

but thanks for the compliments!!! :D

My pieces are more like logs, from 4" to 8" across, 10"+ height, so maybe they have sap or som'thin in'em? Or maybe mine are from really 'old' stuff, because some of mine actually started to fall apart too! Like the insides of the log deteriorates and starts falling apart. Idk, not good luck?! I get mine from PetSmart. It was labeled as manzinita, and if ya look at the one thread I had when I first got some Corys, the wood that the Cory is sitting on, at the top of the tank, that's one of the pieces. Who knows, there's so much 'stuff' mislabeled by that place! Next chance, if I can, I'll try to get some from the source you get yours from, from on this site. :D

I've also gotten a peice from Petsmart, it was labeled for reptiles.. I thought it would be ok anyway, and I asked this one guy that's pretty knowledgeable there too.. and he said it was cool.. So after putting it in, it did become VERY slimy... like really slippery slimy.. I cleaned it off many times. .. WC many times.. and finally gave up on it.. and I still DONT use it.. !!

I would for sure go with Manzman for the manzanita, it's always reasonalbly priced, doesn't release many tannins and is always a good product... :D
