It's best for you to leave your tank along aside from water changes. This way your Bichir can adjust

Fish do not like it when you stick your hand in to move things around. It's best if you can avoid sticking your hands to move the decors or divider.

Ya I know LOL I would just intentally stick my entire arm in my tank!

Is there a chance that my bichirs are stressed out since there is barely any hiding spots in my tank?? i only have a plastic plant in the middle. I used to have pots but I removed them cuz my bichirs always hide in there. They are active now because the hiding spots are gone.

Your tank is fine. You just need to be patience and give your tank plenty of WC.

HEY GUYS, HOW OFTEN DO YOU CHANGE THE WATER?? WHAT DO YOU FEED YOUR POLYS? When you guys are feeding your bichirs, do you actually see them eat or do they eat when the lights are out?
I actually see my 2 bichirs eating everytime usually.. Sometimes i miss it but that is because they are also one of my favorite fish to watch it!!

I've had good results with bichir growth, using cichlid pellets, beefheart, and guppy feeders.

I've had a few senegalus reach a foot in less than a year from about 5-6".

My lower jaw bichirs did not grow as fast, IMO they're not as active and didn't pursue the guppy feeder as much as senegalus an delhezi.

Also massive 40% water changes weekly were needed.

Its all about the temperature, have 2 ornates that grew a lot faster in 30-31 degrees, they are even more active with higher temps. Try it out and u will c how fast they grow.

Ok, i've kept bichirs for about 2 years now so i'm no poly noob (I think). It just seems that I just don't know the way to care for them! As all of you bichir keepers say, "bichirs grow an inch a month," I can't believe how you guys are says are saying! I have a 5 inch delhezi, a 5 inch retropinnis and a 5 inch weeksi and NON OF THEM GREW AN INCH FOR HALF A DANG YEAR!! this is how I keep them:

. I keep them in a 75 gallon tank with an ehiem canister filter

. I feed them either sinking pellets or cut market shrimp once a day.

. I change the water around once a week 30%

.i'm pretty sure the del is a CB and the weeksi and retro are WC.

What am i missing?? What do you guys feed your bichir??? i noticed that for the last month, the bichirs aren't really eating most of the food and most of it is littered at the bottom of the tank.

ANY TIPS?? To be honest, i've kept the del for 1.5 years now it it only grew an inch. i've kept the weeksi and retro for just less than a year and they didn't even grow an inch!!!

what is wrong with my MFKing skills!

Since someone else resurrected this long dead 2 year old thread, i am wondering if the OPs bichirs ever grew? i think the species of bichir you have are all slow growers so...
