Wow guys
I'd like to think by now y'all would know that I know better than most what an ATF is capable of. I am very well aware that all I am accomplishing with Max is to keep him fat and happy. I know what they're capable of, I've seen it first hand.. I also monitor their interactions closely and try to figure out when and how to feed them.
To avoid feeding issues, I wait until the lights have been on for a few hours. Drogo will be on the surface like always and Max will be going to town in front of the power heads on the bottom. I'll drop in 4-5 pellets for Drogo who will make a ruckus eating them which gets Max's attention. Max then comes up to the top and will quickly eat a few pellets. They will then take turns grabbing one pellet at a time off of the surface, I time dropping them in so that they can't compete for food.
I'm nervous what would happen if I went mire than a day or two without feeding.
808, I do NOT TAKE Drogo's price tag lightly.
It was and still is something I have trouble accepting and I am terrified of what may happen to him. I've wanted a black aro since I was about 13 and its not something I take lightly in the least. One way or the other though, this combo is working for me. With my experience in tigers, I see no reason to expect that to change. Max hasn't ever really had to compete for food and is not food aggressive.

EDIT- Also 808, I think your pit bull metaphore is especially well suited to this situation. A pit will never be a cat, but with consistent training and a watchful eye, there's no reason that it can't interact well with other animals.
Max has never needed to hunt, so he doesn't try. If I was to neglect providing for him for a month, I have no doubt he'd find a source of food somewhere in the tank.
I have no plans of neglecting him, however.
