i am thinking about purchasing a erythrinus erythrinus red high fin wolf fish. I have noticed lately on the forum a lot people think they have this fish, but actually don't. I am looking for the one with the nice red/orange on the dorsal and the body. What is the best wide to properly identify them at 2 to 3 inches (sorry can't wait until the wolf fish ID thread is done)? I saw four yesterday that i think are the erythrinus-erythrinus, but are not positive. Also I have read very mixed things on her about keeping more then one together in a tank. Would three be asking for a head ache? Thanks

The pics below are erythrinus erythrinus . I keep four of them to gether in a very densly planted tank. Thye have grown up to gether and I have not had any problems. These are from Shark Aquarium and wild caught in Peru. Mine do not have hardly any red on the dorsal fin. However on the the do on the anal fins and flanks. These guys were about for inches when i got them but they are ready had the coloration on their flanks. I read almost every post about wolf fish on this forum and I have not seen people posting erythrinus erythrinus that are not. Do you believe that these are erythrinus erythrinus?

Pics? It's basically a red wolf with a long flowing tail and splotches of red at the tail and lower body.
I'm working on a rough draft of the sticky right now.

those look nice. If they are high fins would we expect to have some red on the dorsal as well?. I dont wanto end up with erythrinus sp peru or purple (think I have the right color).

There are different sub-species of E. erythrinus. Some have red on dorsal others have red on flanks.

These are Erythrinus sp. Peru. Which I am not sure anyone has proved or disproved that these are not a Variant of Erythrinus erythrinus or what makes a "true" version. Here is an excerpt from a species profile..A species for the specialist, E. erythrinus is also known as the rainbow wolf fish or red hi-fin wolf fish. It is quite variable in colour and pattern depending on collection locality. There is a variant from Peru that has a bright orange belly. Recent studies have highlighted genetic differences in these different populations, suggesting that E. erythrinus is actually a species complex, rather than a single species. ( seriouslyfish.com). .... I trust mine are from Peru and from my understanding the ones with a more yellow coloration are from Brazil.. I think there is alot more to learn about these guys as almost evry profle states they cannot live together. Which in the proper enviroments are not the case. I think this a good conversation as I have seen many color variations and have read conflicting ore incorrect information, Good info on these seems to be very scarce. Here is a couple pics of a couple of mine swimming together.

Are your wild? Also while I do believe location can change appearance, I don't think it would be as dramatic as your Ery and E. sp. peru commonly seen. But I have been wrong plenty of times before.

Coloration is just about the worst way to ID any species.

Humans come in different colors, so do fish. One species.

This "species complex" has very little to no literature on it.

Coloration is variable even within populations, and lastly - colors change throughout the fishes life.

This is going to be one drawn out, stupid, pointless argument until people realize all of the above and that it isnt worth it.

Good luck getting EXACTLY what you want - realistically unless you go and collect them yourself you are going to have to deal with whatever the vendor/LFS can get you.

I wouldnt hold my breath for the Archotype Erythrinus erythrinus
