Nice folks...I've been doing this for over 3 years. Peace lilly's and draceana as well. THESE are the biggest leaves I've seen...and the thickest vines as well. Pardon the haggard appearance of the tank, as it's mostly utilitarian now. Fat raphael, 2 foot mastacembelus s.p. turquoise severum, and a stinkpot.

Just wanted to show my pothos setup....running in 2 ac 110s with the sponge cut in half...These plants took off right away (been going for 2 months), and have lowered my nitrates in my heavily stocked 180..seems like there's new growth every time I look and the leaves are huge. Thanks to f1vet for all your help and quick responses to questions...If you don't have pothos I would highly recommend it..I've kept fish for 30 years and this is one of the most beneficial things for my tanks I've come across. Thanks very much! That was exactly the goal of this thread. After I found out how cheap and easy this was it was a no brainer to spread the word. Just didn't realize it was going to take off this much! But I'm glad because I'm sure its helped thousands of fish!

Looks fantastic! Very well done! Keep the updates coming as the nitrates are dropping :p

Anybody tried an indoor aquaponic garden?
that's essentially what horiyoshi has although its not a dedicated aquarium purely for terrestrial based plants! I'm sure you can plan and make a great setup and easily get away with just doing weekly top offs!

It was a pain to wash them >.<. But...View attachment 1015742View attachment 1015743

Looks awesome! Great job not using the bathtub. Update us on the progress!

I've pretty much always had pothos as a houseplant (since the late seventies) and have NEVER seen such large leaves on them!
Every plant is different and their are many variations of regular pothos. You wouldn't recognize them in the wild unless youve seen a full plant! uploadfromtaptalk1401459249977.jpg

In defense of Pothos as a living filter, I added just one broken off stem from mine to my planted 20 gallon long, and when I noticed that the aquatic plants weren't doing well for reason I couldn't quantify, I decided to remove the pothos (remember, it was just a single stem with good roots) to see what would happen.

Within four days there was a major improvement in the growth of the aquatic plants, and for me that stands as a testimony to the vigorous uptake of pothos.
Their good for starving algae of nutrients as well. Definitely suck up the needed nitrate for aquatic plants! You can still dose extra ferts such as nitrates to make up for it. Just test to make sure

In the wild or nature they have optimum conditions to grow thru most stages of life as opposed to mostly juvenile in aquariums. On the other page the guy that has the wild caught plant from Florida has a mature adult specimen that's huge. The capability of these plants isn't widely known but the leaves get 2'+ uploadfromtaptalk1401459249977.jpguploadfromtaptalk1401459262245.jpg

You definitely have a great setup and good sized leaves for aquaria! Those draceanas can get as big as full grown corn stalks!

He simply has what appears to be a sump filter that's under his tank with florescent lighting, all of those species of plants including pothos use aquarium water as a growing medium opposed to soil. Roots just need to be submerged into water. The 1st page of this thread explains the basics for pothos, he just took it to another level which looks amazing!

Well the tank below the larger tank is just used as a bio/mechanical filter (removing debris and converting toxic ammonia to nitrates) On his setup this is a very convenient place to put the plants, some find it difficult to mount on top of aquariums with fish especially ones that jump because they need a secure lid, so having a sump gives you a lot of water turnover and movement which makes a sump a great place to add terrestrial plants.

All you have to do is buy a sump, pump and plumbing, then add the plants and they will quickly establish!

It sounds easier then my explanation but its in the realm of possibilities for us fish keepers!

You could do this on top of your tank a few different ways with out a sump. Post a pic of your setup and ill throw you some ideas!

No sump, going through a cage, on the top. Need more heat, but all good.

I do have to clean off my intakes everyday, from the stinkpot sleeping in the roots at night.
Good thing the 6500k/5000k keeps em pounding out foliage!

And I know they get big in the wild, but those shots, of course, do no justice. I've got 3/4" vines, that are going woody!

It rules!

I need to come on here more.

Oh, and boys, they are called Emergents! We don't use that term anymore?

Its become more scientific, terrestrial seems to be a popular word but I dig emergents. Epipremnum aureum (pothos) is a flowering plant in the araceae family. Its been known to grow 60'+ high and 2" stems in their native sub tropical habitats!

Its weird to think pothos isn't even a true ivy. Many misconceptions about this plant. But 3/4" stems in a house is amazing!

Only for emergent plants. Pothos isn't an emergent, it's just being grown with submerged roots.
Yes traditionally its not grown with roots submerged but that's the beauty of this plant.

That would be great if someone could make a small vent/hole in the wall where then tank is and let the pothos grow up and outside with natural light and humidity, obviously 65°f or lower temps can cause pothos to die or stunt so it would need to be a warm and humid climate all year.

Since pothos is a climber I thought I'd redecorate and give these stems and leaves more room to climb and grow (what they do best) it took me awhile to untangle the masses of stems but when I did I have massively long stems, biggest one is 12' and the others avg 4-8' which IMO is pretty spectacular and even better some of them get natural light! Glad I untangled them because that couldn't have been helping growth!

Pretty soon my living room will be taken over!
