Going to get a hydroponic basket soon but this will do since it's small, decided I will jump on the bandwagon as well. I didn't really get it for the benefits of it I just got it because I thought it looked cool.image.jpgimage.jpg

Looks great! It definitely has appeal both functionally and looks! But without the nitrate drop it wouldn't be as rad or popular! Keep us updated!

bought me a golden potho plant and a huge basket...need to figure out how to ready my plants for duty without killing them. Does pea gravel limit efficiency?

Yes sir! They definitely save on the water changes!

1st off I use the pea gravel hydro basket setup on page 1 and explain everything you need to know. But ill review a few key points!

-wash soil out of roots thoroughly using room temp water
-make sure to use the nicest bath tub in your house when rinsing soil (don't worry about the dirt clogging up pipes we will get to that later!) jk jk
-after plant/roots have been cleaned snip an inch or two off the roots so the plant establishes quicker
-if you want to use supplemented lighting to enhance growth 5000-7000k cfl bulbs work great, 12-18watts per plant and a 12/12 photo period is fine
-remove any dead or yellowing leaves
-rinse pea gravel too
-make sure pets like dogs and cats cannot reach the plant
-pothos will feed off ammonia/nitrates aka fish waste so a decent Bio load helps
-as the plant grows the nitrates shrink, give it 2-4 weeks to see a reduction and a month or two for a size able reduction
-buy a decent test kit like API fw master kit to monitor nitrates reduction so you can accurately calibrate your water change practices for the first few months to year

And to answer your question pea gravel or a substrate will not hinder growth, I have one setup with gravel and one without and their about the same.

So how do you unclog a "dirty" tub?
That works. Throw up some pics

Un clogging a tub- wire coat hanger made straight, repeated up and down motion in the drain. Then a little draino for reassurance and a expensive dinner for the woman, which usually involves sushi and many cocktails that are for some reason 10$ a pop.

This thread has gotten me quite excited I must say. My next door neighbor/uncle has a lot of what I believe looks like pothos growing on his pond (I will post pics later) so now I have the opportunity to make my move.

My tanks get both ambient light along with lighting from my oddysea 6500k t5s.

This particular tank gets some direct sunlight so I'm interested to try it in this tank in particular
