Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

Thought I might as well make a DIY thread, I know its been done before but not the way I did it. I don't use a hob or anything for added flow, the plants are simply submerged a few inches in my water and the roots suck up nitrates and the plant grows... Simple. Each plant consumes 5-10ppm per week and needs no added light!

First off go to your lhs, in the garden section they should have hydroponics baskets for about 4$:

Next, grab a GOLDEN IVY POTHOS PLANT (also known as devils ivy), usually cost 8-10$ per plant:

Next, take the plant out of the pot, clean away all dirt with a hose (DO NOT USE BATH TUB LIKE ME, GF IS STILL MAD LOL):

Make sure roots are clean and free of soil:

Snip about an inch off the end of the roots (this helps them establish quicker) and place in hydroponic basket, then carefully add pea gravel or aquarium gravel around them, making sure all the roots are NOT visible:

The most difficult step is finding a way to suspend the basket in the water, I just used a recip and cut my DIY metal shelf lid and placed it in:

Now your done, just place on top of tank and enjoy!

Lower N03, cool look, lasts forever, purifies water and the air!

Make sure house pets cannot get at the plant since it can be very toxic to pets! Thx guys!

I have been told you can stick the roots right into the back of a back mounted filter as well if you don't want the roots hanging in your aquascape

I've been growing pothos out of the top of my AC110 for a year or two now. I took the sponge, cut it in half lengthwise to make more room for the roots, then just set the plant on top of it. I pull the plant and sponge out every few weeks to clean the sponge. It doesn't grow super well because I have very little light getting to it. But it does stay very healthy. I just recently added a grow light under my stand and starting growing it in my sump as well. In just a few weeks it has starting growing like crazy!

After trying every orchid and plant in the house (family is a big fan of them) I can safely say none are semi aquatic and my betta just wondered what I was doing with the filter lol. Pothos has been ordered after a week of killing plants

This seems like a pretty good idea. My nitrates are already 5 - 15ppm, If I could get them down to 0 - 5ppm, that would be perfect.

Did you trim back the soil grown roots so it can grow water adjusted ones?
