It looks like a hybrid to me,Rivulatus crossed with something. Amphilophus probably.

That's not some type of Vieja?

I'm pretty sure GTs can't hybridize w/ Amphilophus, just like Festae can't either. That's why they moved them to Mesoheros

My friend had a huge male GT and both a female RD and a female FH were constantly fighting for his affection and he refused both of them for years. Wouldn't even attempt it much less successfully hybridize

It could be anything Frank. It's not resembling any veija to my eyes.To me it has an amphilophus shaped head and the fins of a rivulatus.

cool thanks guys, if anyone knows what he is that would be awesome!!

Almost any heroine cichlid can hybridize with another of the tribe Heroini (maybe even other tribes). I have seen pics of Australoheros species from Uruguay, mate with convict types from Central America, and create viable fry.
Mesoheros could possibly mate with Herichthys (not that its a good thing) but a possibility given certain conditions were right.
When you consider that DNA sequencing has tracked the ancestors of many Central American cichlids to a northward colonization by their South American ancestors, (the original ancestors of Mesoheros) and that those cichlids radiated (some as far as Texas) to become all the different Vieja, Herichthys thru evolution over millions of years, etc. Anything is possible

its kind of awesome that nobody know exactly what kind of cichlid this is I'm suprised in a good way. the owner purchased it at petco/pet smart !!!
