Loving this thread! This is so what I wanted back when I first started coming in here. (Also, I didn't know there was a White Volta...)

Does anyone have a straight list with all of the variations or is that just crazy to ask for?

koltsixx koltsixx - I agree that this is sticky-worthy. I also agree that we have some outdated stickies up top and it could probably use some refreshing. Still some keepers up there for sure though.
I do have something that hao posted a while ago will find it.

Keep in mind to we as hobbyists probably confuse things too.

I used to over think every word that was listed in the polys name.

An endlicheri "dabola" and endlicheri "dabola" tinkisso river are the same fish. Looking on the map you see dabola is just a town near the tinkisso.

Same with faranah lap and faranah lap "guinea" same exact fish faranah is just the town in guinea

Hey man havig you join the bandwagon would be awesome. About the id'ing.... i still have issues with it lol some of us have better eyes than other when looking for the small details. Its a great topic because so little is known about the species there really isnt any one right or wrong answer. We have no idea if they migrate during rainy/drought/mating seasons. The endli debate is the best because most of the endli available lately are from two lications in guinea (faranah and dabola) and the black volta river. The voltas do look very different than the guinea endli. The easiest to notice is thick banding on the volta's secondly would be the headshape is more boxish/rounder towards the snout on the voltas.

The debate regarding the faranah vs dabola is interesting because faranah have even flatter heads than dabola and their patterns are a little different too. Feel like the faranah bands extend further towards the belly. Its hard for me to wrap my head around the differences between these two. Dabola and faranah are so close together on the map and at some point the water way have to connect or even further up the river chain the tinkisso and niger are both connected. It seems too close to say hey all faranah have x traits that are different from dabola but they are their in our fish so im probably wrong

Faranah and dabola side by side

One last thing ignore the base color (brown/tan/grey) Vancouver_98683 Vancouver_98683 once pointed out that it changes frequently with each individual fishes mood and it definitly rings true

Thanks for all the info. J jaws7777 !! And the warm welcome that's been extended by you and the rest of the guys. Sorry for not responding sooner I was really busy. I plan on studying your posts and pics as while I'm sure some of this info is in other threads the way it's laid out here makes it IMO easy to follow for someone uninitiated into the various kinds of Lower Jaw Poly regional variants.

I still have some questions though, so I can make sure I'm understanding correctly. First from what I'm understanding most of the lower jaw Polys are being imported from three locations. Faranah and Dabola in Guinea and the Black Volta river in Ghana. The Dabola name referencing the city and the portion of the Tinikisso River that runs near it. And the Faranah location refers to a region of the Niger River that runs close to the Faranah town and sub-prefecture. While Black Volta, White Volta and Red Volta run along the upper portion of Ghana. Correct?

And the Polys from said rivers are all Endli and Lap? Or are there other species collected in those locations? Also I believe my last purchase from Toyin was labeled as a Nigerian Lap. Which I assume is just a Lap collected in Nigeria? Any info. if thers is any on distinguishing characteristics?

Distinguishing characteristics include flattened heads which are most prominent in Faranah with Dabola following closely behind and with Volta having the most boxish face and thick banding. Differentiating between Dabola and Faranah can be further seen in their pattern. With the Faranahs pattern extending further down toward the belly. Correct?

Again Thanks for the info. hopefully I understood it correctly.
