Hello! Please excuse me if this is posted in the wrong area, I'm very very new to these forums.

I recently received an Oscar as a gift... I know. I don't wanna take him back to the LFS because they don't take care of their fish. The tanks are always in horrible condition and I don't have the heart to put him back in there. From what I was told this guy was in a 10g setup with a 6-7" knife fish and more smaller cichlids on top of that. He was very bloated when I received him but one quick Epson salt bath fixed him up right away.

He's in a cycled 40g tall tank by himself and he's about 4". I test the water daily and change it as needed. I cannot afford a huge setup right now but I will be keeping an eye out for a secondhand tank of at least 75g and will hopefully find a nice one in the next few months. Will this be okay for him temporarily?

I just don't want to post him anywhere and have people jump on me for having him in tank that's too small. Am I a bad person? ;_;

I would post some photos of him, but there's a post requirement so I gotta wait for that. I believe he is a true albino since he has no stripes and is all one pale color. He is very handsome, I assure you! :D

and great job taking the little guy in, Ocars great fish, you will be glad you did. and keep in mind he does not need a buddy, Oscars do great all by themselves.

pops pops Thank you very much. I am checking craiglist and my local b/s/t facebook page daily so I can't miss a good deal if I see one!

I've actually been wanting an Oscar and have been researching them for a while, which is the reason I received one as a gift. I wasn't ready for it because I wanted to find a bigger tank first, but the gift had good intentions. It was also from someone who doesn't know about fish at all so I can't get too mad. He just figured my empty 40g tank was big enough.

and don't worry, even if I did have room for a friend I wouldn't wanna get one. I personally enjoy focusing on one big fish rather than a pair.

I feel a lot better about this already, thank you guys!

Great job on taking care of him. He probably had way less chances of surviving in the fish shop than living for a few months in a 40G.
If you're running out of time and haven't bought that tank yet, extra large water changes can always maintain a fish in a smaller than ideal tank...daily or every other day if needs be until you get him a proper tank.

My tank once broke and I ended up with 7 grown four to five year old clown loaches in an 80 litre plastic container for 2 months. I just changed their water daily. I drained as much as I could without stressing them and re-filled. They were perfectly fine. Its not the lack of space that kills fish or makes them sick, its the poor water quality resulting from the smaller volume of water.

great sentiment fire but do not agree with it. do what you know you can handle and afford, and work from there with experience on your decision making.
