SENEGAL BICHIR fry disappearing/dying at 1cm size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Grass are aquaone plastic mats. not all shops sell them and cost about $30 each mat. Also tried the yarn type spawning mops, but they didn't like it. Could be a case by case basis. I would say they are old - 4-5yrs old.

I made my own spawning mops and the females hide in it all the time lol20170913_101734.jpg

Very cool stuff guys! Mighty Wizard Mighty Wizard when fish are small the most critical component is giving them enough food to keep their bellies full and enough proteins and fats to keep growing. Variety only keys in a bit later, if you don't feed enough to small fish they will stunt at a smaller size.

What are you people feeding? For bichirs I'd start with walter or micro worms until they are big enough for baby brine shrimp, they sink which is good. BBS is the food for raising fry, full of proteins and amino acids. Once they are past that a good diet of dried and frozen foods can be implemented, powdered fry foods are just the thing for this due to the higher protein or fats content. Very important for all foods to sink

Once they hit a few cm normal dried foods like micro granules, frozen foods and such will be good to feed at a steady pace.

I'd also think a tight fitting cover is critical, just like with bettas I'd think a bichirs lungs would need humid air to develop properly. So the use of a shallow tank with a lid is important for raising these imo.

This is just my take on this topic, I'm hoping to buy a group of wild caught senegals to breed one day as well. :)

Baby bichirs need live food. Blackworms, gammarus, daphinia, microworms, live bearer babies anything like this. Gut load your "food" before you feed and your baby bichirs will get the nutrition they need. later when big enough you can ween them to nonlive foods right now you gotta keep them going.

I think you misunderstand me. Anything needs copious amounts of fat and protein to grow, this goes for fish, humans, and bacteria. This is why eggs and seeds are stuffed with these things. Proteins and fat however are extremely broad terms, and include very different smaller groups of organic compounds. Some will inhibit your fish's growth, some will boost it, and some will supplement the others by working in synergy. And that's where it all lies, with the synergy.

See I'm not proposing that anyone feed their fry oatmeal or some such. Only that it might be a good idea to source the necessary nutrients from as wide a pool as possible, while avoiding obvious no-nos like beef heart.

Good points. Need to discuss this with my professor friend at some point.

I'm liking the clarity you have, do you have any qualifications in biology or such?

Thank you, but no I'm just a stoner with Asberger really. :p I always wanted to be an academic, but ended up as a welder. Good money though. And there's still time I suppose, I'm still in my twenties.

And yes it would be fun to hear what your Professor says, he sounds like a very interesting fella.
