You know, now that I'm thinking of it, I did have an orange goldfish (looks just like a common, but both of his parents were white comet goldfish), that developed an white splotch on his head outside in the pond over the summer, that look exactly as being described here, like the orange was peeling off, due to a growth or something. And yes, a have seen goldfish turn from orange to white many, many times, and that was not it, it literally looked as if the orange was peeling off, exposing a white opaque growth underneath. I actually forgot about this incident, but when I checked on the fish, it was completely orange again, with no white growth on its head (for those unfamiliar, when goldfish turn from black to orange, or from orange to white, they almost never turn back).
