Sudden ammonia spike in 75 gallon tank.

Take a closer look at the testresults again. I wanna say that ammonia is 0.25 not 0. Its a grenish yellow not all yellow in the test tube.

Could be as you said but I continued with a 30% WC even after this test. Will update another test result in a couple of days. I want to reach a point where I could skip wc and the bb can handle the ammonia, I am pretty sure am not there yet.

You are not there yet. Thats right and you should never skip wc more then one day with you tank. Even if its only one fish the arowana makes a quite big bioload on its own.

This trickle filter is on my 700L grow out tank. Its filled with about 70L bio media and i still change at least 50% twice a week

Hello; I had planned to avoid this thread a bit back due to not understanding your point of view. This gives some insight. Bottom line is you will never get to a point of skipping WC. Even when the ammonia is at zero you will still need to do large and often WC.

Once you get everything good in the tank numbers wise I would throw a sponge filter in there and get a good hang on the back filter run them for awhile with the canister than once you build the bb up on the new filters take the canister filters out of the equation they will be alot easier to maintain especially if yo only are using a 75 gallon there plenty of sufficent hob filters that would make your life alot easier

And the nitrate is hard to see because its not showing 20 on the colorchart.
But then hey its better with high nitrate then high ammonia and i guess this tank is on its way to be stable again. He must ad something to buffer the ph and kh to keep that stable or this will most surtenly happen again.

i guess he can add coral chips for this.... i did that for my aro tank too

you can try to reduce water change frequency with more water changed per cycle or higher water change frequency but less water change

you can't avoid water change totally ... unless you give your fish away

I said that "I want to reach a point where I can skip the water change" pertaining to the current frequency of what I am doing, 30% water change daily.

In the past I used to change 30 to 40 percent water once every 10 days, but I had the parameters in check except for nitrate at around 20 to 40ppm.

Yes, I completely understand without water change the fish wont survive.

Im using 50L pumice and about 20L of bioballs i had laying around and running it with a returnpump thats rated for 2640 gallons.
