Some older pics of my Danio rerio var. frankei
How big are those beardless barbs in your top pic. I've got some of these, seems they aren't that common in the hobby. Here's a couple of mine at about 3-4". Yours look to have taken on their more adult silver colour whereas my young ones are a lot more bronze looking.
mine are 4-5" though that picture was when I was using a temporary T-5 reef light on the tank since my old LED fixture broke and was waiting for the new one to arrive. The picture with the raiamas guttatus is what the light looks like now. Mine look like yours, though sometimes a bit lighter. I actually got all 3 at a fish store that was selling them as tinfoil barbs (I'm guessing they were bycatch) so got them for cheap
Lol, i don't think they're similar to tinfoils one bit, you'd have thought an LFS would pick up on that.
Barbs are notorious plant eaters. I recently had to transfer half a dozen filaments from my 180 because as soon as they got to about 4" they decided to start ravaging my plants. I'm wondering if my small beardless barbs are going to follow a similar path once they get a bit bigger. At the moment they're not interested in my plants at all. I notice you have some greenery, what's your experience so far?

Yeah I don’t know how they mixed them up with tinfoils, but I thought I might as well play dumb and get them while they still had them lol
in this tank for some reason plants almost never did well underwater, but it never looks like they really ate any of them, just at best tore them out of the substrate. I grew out some jungle vals in pots to help establish roots and then put one back in the large tank so we will see how it goes. They never really seem to go after any of the plants growing above the water with their roots in the water. I feed them every day to twice a week (skip some days occasionally) and don’t mind them nibbling on plants so long as they don’t do anything too damaging. For plants I have java ferns, various anubias, java moss, A few other ferns, jungle val, a couple of Phragmipedium Orchids (longifolium, pearcel and one other sp.), a monstera deliciosa, creeping fig and some other plants.
Well if they suddenly start on my plants as they grow they'll follow the same route as my filaments, i'll dump them in my 360g! Lol.
I'm just glad i've found someone else who's got them. When I first posted about mine a couple of months ago I had a really good reaction to them but hardly anybody had heard of them. When I did a bit more research on them, like you said earlier, they seem to find their way into the LFS system as "bycatch", just fillers to make short orders up and such.
They are a gorgeous fish, they eat everything, not fussy at all, and they fit very well into my community set up, no nipping, chasing or anything. They do seem to like each others company, my 5 are always close to one another so I don't think they'd do too well as single specimens. And the biggest draw for me, like filaments, they get quite big, between 6-9" I believe and that's when they go way more silvery from what i've seen from pictures of mature specimens.
I'm looking forward to see how they progress, we'll have a chat once in a while and compare notes.
