That is indeed the fish as well as the same guide...and I see that it does have the fin extensions, which I failed to spot while watching the show. Stunning creature; I wonder if it looks like a grey log when not in breeding dress. Thanks to everyone for pitching in with way more info than I had found myself.
Amazing how something like this simple thread can cause these fish to come into our tanks in future. Lol

How true! I was impressed by those fish and thought that perhaps a couple of other folk might want to see them, and maybe comment...but I got much more reaction than I ever expected. Seeing them in tanks someday would be the icing on the cake. :)

There's about 9 seasons of this show and only a few are dedicated to fish. Which season are the episodes with these river fish in so I can jump straight to the good stuff?

Season 7 episode 11 is the pacu episode but I watched from episode 9 because they catch black piranhas then in 10 they go for rtc.

Important to remember that some of the dorsal fin extensions in several of these species are SEASONALLY developed (during breeding season), not present in immature specimens, and less developed (or absent) outside of breeding season.

I've just watched the same three as you back to back. Really enjoyable. The RTC episode, for me, is tinged with sadness. When you look at the size of those magnificent fish and where they live in the wild, and then you see threads on here where people are asking what size tank they should be kept in!

It just hits home that some of the larger fish we keep really don't belong in the hobby at all.

I had to re-visit this thread after a recent find. I am not really a fan of silver dollars, had never before heard of the genus Tometes until it was brought up in this thread. Now, only a few days later, I see TOMETES SIDEROCARAJENSIS "RIO TOCANTINS" being offered by a local dealer/importer. He calls them "silver dollars on steroids" and says they are one of his personal quest fish. This guy has seen it all and kept most of it; it takes a lot to get him excited.

Small world. :)

Fish Heaven
From some Google searching, I found a Facebook post calling them “sweet water pacu”

I’ll try to find out exactly what river. The man in the photo is Rovin Alvin. He’s the guide in Guyana that takes people to these fish. Gordon Ramsey and Steven Rinella featured him on their shows.
I've fished with Alvin before and a few years before that. The red pacu cannot be exported due to various issues. Its a fly in destination. there are no animals allowed to be moved from region to region. there are no export facilities in that country. I've tried, fished, and done this a few times. I have not given up yet., do you guys want to see pictures of me holding the red pacu :)
