Hi! I have been looking into getting a jau catfish. Does anyone know how fast they grow and how aggressive they can be? Would they be fine with fish there size?

Jau’s are one of the biggest catfish in S.A. They will eat anything that they can fit in their capacious mouth. Similarly sized and streamline fish are at great risk of being consumed. Therefore tank mates must be carefully selected. Tank requirements are massive for adult fish. A pond or pool would be appropriate for this species. One of the members here thebiggerthebetter Has this species in a 4,500 gallon tank.

Yeah I’ve seen his fish. It’s a pretty cool fish, it do you k is the temper of them?

A local importer/wholesaler/retailer has a single large specimen alone in a tank. Of the thousands of fish listed on his inventory, a very few have personalized comments on the list...such things as "nice", "cool", etc.

He has hundreds of aggressive species of cichlids, wolffish, etc. come and go through his installation. None have ever earned a warning comment, until now. The Jau is the first fish ever with the comment "ill-tempered". :)

So it is not completely aggressive.

So it is not completely aggressive.

No, I would interpret that to mean that it is a nightmare. The guy wastes few words; when he makes a comment like that you know it's serious. :)

So if I were to keep it it would hafto be by itself the rest of its life?

I have no idea; I was just passing on what a fellow I trust cautions about the individual fish he has.

I know if it were me buying the fish, I would plan on keeping it solo permanently; I might....just might...experiment very cautiously with tankmates, but never without a backup plan in place. You need expert cat guys on this thread:

There is a large difference between aggressive/territorial behaviour and predatory/piscivorous behaviour. Understanding this distinction is critical for successfully keeping many fish species.

You will need a very very large tank regardless of compatibility issues. The higher level of requirements - dedication - skills & experience for keeping monster sized fish is what separates and attracts advanced hobbyists to maintaining demanding fish species.

If you absolutely insist on tankmates, really small fish (things like neons, tiger barbs, or kuhli loaches) would probably be fine (provided the catfish is at or close to adult size). They are so small relative to the catfish that it probably won't see a point in chasing after them to eat or bully.

You can read a bit more about this principle here, with an excellent in-depth explanation given by jjohnwm: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/...ought-one-of-these.744639/page-3#post-8393090
