Nasty day with tomorrow predicted to be even uglier. Power was already out about two hours and just came back on.

* WHAT...Southeast winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.

* IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines.
Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be
difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.




There are already multiple reports of trees down, some on power lines, and the wind will be worse tomorrow. I have business to attend to in town, but will avoid driving until winds die down. ... redwoods could come down at any time.

We are already feeling the effects of the "bomb cyclone" that is moving into our area.


We live in such a beautiful place, but these trees could fall at any time. Much worse in a heavy wind when they are really swaying

What phenomenally bad luck...to be driving past a tree that is, I am assuming, literally centuries old...and to be exactly in its path as it falls.

In the 33 yrs I have driven on this road, I've only come across one tree on a car. Fortunately, it was a small tree and only damaged the top of an old man's car. He was pretty distraught though, and kept saying "The tree fell on my car" It was about 10 pm and very dark. Interesting that in my area there can be a lot of thumps and bumps while driving at night. One time, I ran over something large on the road. The truck ahead of me immediately pulled over and stopped, so I did the same. I turned my car around and headed back to the "bump". The man walked there and in the headlights from my car, he could see, and he pulled the bear cub that he had hit (which I ran over) to the side of the road. It was probably a yearling. I was very uneasy, expecting an angry mom bear to come charging at us.

Meanwhile today, trees down every where in my area. Main road to Oregon, Hwy 199 has one way traffic as they continue to work on trees/power lines. US 101 has had multiple closures with trees across the road. Here are some picks people have posted on FB today as they wait to get through:

This is just down the road from my house this morning. They are still working on power lines and trees, and US Hwy 199 has one way traffic as they work on trees along the road.

I'm guessing the overhead power line system is regularly cussed about in areas such as yours? Big trees with relatively small root systems versus high winds is a recipe for disaster.

I'm wondering if power lines would be better underground in these type of areas? Maybe it wasn't an option when the current system was installed many years ago?

You are correct. I'm sure it wasn't an option years ago. Very fortunate that the heavy damaging wind predicted for yesterday wasn't too bad....the power stayed on... Road closures were mostly due to water across roads. Most of the FB pictures were of the high surf (predicted to be up to 30' high)






Another wind advisory for today with winds 31-36 mph and gusts up to 50 mpg predicted. I am going to venture on that road today and get to town....

Wow that is a beautiful place. Love it. So sorry about the couple in the Honda Accord.

82F and sunny here in the Cayman Islands, as usual. I prefer a temperate climate myself but I do appreciate almost everything else about living here such as; good economy, safe for raising kids, etc.

After several foggy, cloudy days, the thick hoarfrost that had built up on everything did not completely melt away during our one sunny day. Last night and this morning were again very foggy, thickening that layer of frost even more, so that when a light fluffy snow began falling it clung and did not melt when it hit those ice-covered branches. Hard to capture the spectacular beauty of it in a pic...hard for me, anyway...



This pic actually contains 5 Pine Grosbeaks (roughly Robin-sized, not tiny birds...) clustered in this small tree; 3 are almost completely obscured by the thick hoar/snow coating on the branches.

Today, after about ten days of rain, with the river below us all brown and ugly and running high, todays prediction is "mostly sunny" While it is 32 degrees with light frost on the roof, the morning sunrise colors are beautiful, and the river is back to its usual beautiful color.

Nothing for the first hour...and then a half-dozen perfect eating-size Eyes in the next hour.
